In 1993, KinderMourn developed "Helping the Hurt," a community outreach initiative for children and youth. The goal of the program is to provide bereavement support to children who cannot access KinderMourn's in-house support services due to economic factors and transportation issues.
Grief services, including individual counseling and support groups, are offered in neighborhood community centers and local schools. KinderMourn counselors create a caring, supportive environment where bereaved children can express their feelings and explore healthy ways to grieve.
If you would like information about establishing a Helping the Hurt program in your area school or community center, please contact our Outreach Program Director.
"I was most impressed with the students' willingness to share their feelings about death ... most had no outlet for their grief before the group. The program provided a very meaningful experience for all."
